Ars Technica has published an article about a problem with the upcoming Apple Push Notification Service for the iPhone.

Like I thought, they’ve pointed out that this service will require iPhone developers to setup a complex back-end infrastructure to support the service — as opposed to using background processes.

Depending on the type of service and its popularity, this infrastructure would need to scale but would also need users to subscribe to it (e.g., for giving credentials for an IM service).
