The dust has settled after Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 3G during the WWDC 08. The event has sold out for the first time in history and been incredibly covered y the tech press.
The iPhone 3G adds (1) fast 3G networking, (2) GPS support, (3) affordability and (4) more services.
It’s About the Platform
People pointed that the device is not the first on the market to have these features but it’s not the point because it’s not about the device, it’s about the platform. Apple is clearly selling it to developers.
During one hour, the keynote was about demos of apps for the iPhone. I saw awesome apps with a quality I’ve rarely seen on any mobile device. Apple has adopted the same strategy has the gaming industry.
With high-quality games selling at $9.99 and apps below $3, the App Store is expected to have a huge adoption rate that could potentially emerge as a $1 billion market.
The Empire Strikes Back
Apple’s strategy of giving users a great experience end-to-end — not only on the device but through services — has even more value in the fragmented world of mobile devices.
Apple is establishing, product by product, a highly profitable and sustainable business. They are doing what they did with the iPod; a strategy just perfectly executed.
Apple is attracting people and enterprises with standout features that will lock them in. When done, it will be very hard for the competition to fight back.
