I’ve been an early adopter of a lot of web apps for the last couple of years and I’ve tried a lot more in 2007. But I’ve found myself using very few of these apps on a day to day basis; and none of them were published in 2007.
Here are some of my favorite (in no specific order).
News Reading: iGoogle
I’ve never liked RSS readers; I’ve never been comfortable reading news with any of them.
So, I’m “just” using iGoogle as my start page to monitor my incoming emails and more than 100 feeds. My feeds are organized in 10 tabs for all topics I’m interested it.
Since feeds are displayed on a single page (showing the last 3 or 4 posts for each of them), I can quicky scan for any interesting news.
Email: Gmail
Gmail has been my favorite email service since 2004. The way it organizes mails as conversations has proven to be very efficient. I’ve never seen anything like this in any other mail app. Some people hate it but I definitely love it.
Concerning calendars, I generally use a combination of apps. I have multiple calendars on different services (e.g.: Google Calendar, Facebook, Upcoming) but I aggregate all of them into iCal so everything ends up in a single place.
Social Network: Twitter
Twitter has been the biggest surprise of 2007. I knew the service since 2006 but at the time, I was quite skeptical about it; now I’m a fan and I’m using it every single day (with the amazing Twitterific); Twitter has become the place where I’m posted with the most exciting news, share information and meet new people. It’s incredible how useful it has became.
I also use LinkedIn quite often for business purposes but unlike lots of people I’m not a big fan of Facebook, and I’m still trying to figure out what is it and how it can help me.
Photos: Flickr
I’ve been an early user of Flickr, but in 2007 I’ve decided to go for a pro account; Flickr is now my place of choice for sharing photos but this is also a great place to discover amazing photos and great people. With PictureSync, it’s the perfect companion to iPhoto.
Bookmarks: Delicious
Delicious has been around since 2004 and I’m still using it everyday to tag and share my links. I’ve definitely dropped my browser bookmarks.
Personal Organization: Backpack
Backpack is one of the great apps from 37signals. I’m using it everyday to organize my errands and my projects. I’ve tried a lots of GTD apps (both on the web and on the desktop) but Backpack is still my favorite. It’s clean, fast and always available.
Conclusion
While writing this article, I’ve browsed the whole TechCrunch Archives for 2007 looking for something specia but actually, I didn’t find anything “life changing”.
2007 was a great year for the web but I would say it was more a year of maturity (in services and web technologies) and acquisitions, than a year of innovation.
