During the last couple of month I’ve been experiencing pretty bad Internet conditions: frequent losses of connexion, ultimate slowness and huge pings. I’ve been moving to different places so I had to rely exclusively on open Wifi spots around; it was a definitely frustrating experience.
Everything I do is online: reading news, writing, coding, being organized, keeping appointments, keeping in touch, playing, listening music, sharing life and talking with people. I rely on the Internet.
I can’t work anymore without being connected. Even if I can write or code offline, I often need to browse the Internet to search for information or read documentations. Not being connected is like not having electricity.
Being able to work offline with web apps is a hot topic and a platform like Apollo is trying to fill the gap; but as far as I am concerned it won’t help at all. I don’t care about managing my appointments with an “offline Google Calendar” if I can’t update it to receive further SMS reminders. I just want to be connected everywhere.
What’s interesting by the way is that I’ve been able to test some apps in the worst conditions ever. Playing World of Warcraft with a roundtrip of 8 seconds (or more) is a nightmare but the game is quite robust; I’ve never lost or broke anything from my frequent deconnections and the game is always fair. Impressive.
Sun used to claim that “the network is the computer”, that’s absolutely true from my perspective.
